UNDP TO SUPPORT MINISTRY OF PUBLIC WORKS' INSTITUTIONAL REFORMS

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MoPWT) signed on August 12, 2026 a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) that establishes a strategic framework for cooperation to support institutional reforms, improve public service delivery, and advance sustainable infrastructure in Lebanon.  The UNDP indicated that the partnership aims to foster cooperation between the MoPWT and the UNDP across several national priorities, which include digital transformation, urban and territorial planning, sustainable public transport, maritime safety, as well as the sustainability and decarbonization of public assets. It added that the MoU provides a framework for cooperation on crisis prevention, response and recovery, and provides technical assistance and capacity development to strengthen the ministry’s planning and implementation capacities.  Further, the UNDP indicated that the MoPWT’s mandate covers airports, ports, land borders, infrastructure, and public transportation, but it noted that it is currently operating under significant human-resource constraints. It said that the ministry’s priority is to provide its teams with the expertise and global experience required to achieve tangible reforms. It added that the MoU will support the ministry’s capacity building, institutional strengthening and the implementation of reforms, and will help the latter translate its plans and solutions into concrete results. In addition, the UNDP indicated that the partnership reflects its shared commitment with the ministry to advance public sector reforms, strengthen infrastructure governance, and provide more efficient, resilient and sustainable public services across Lebanon.
