Rosatom says site surveys nearly complete for two nuclear units in KazakhstanRussian state nuclear corporation Rosatom has nearly completed site surveys for the construction of two VVER-1200 power units in Kazakhstan, company chief Alexei Likhachev said at a meeting on nuclear energy development in Moscow.Russia and Kazakhstan have agreed on terms for cooperation on the nuclear plant project and on a Russian export credit to finance it, with both sides exchanging the relevant intergovernmental agreements.Likhachev earlier said the Russian credit would cover most of the investment, "but not all," with Kazakhstan covering the rest.Rosatom expects to begin the active construction phase in 2027, Likhachev has said, with the pace depending on the customer and the main project parameters to be determined by Kazakhstan's government.Likhachev previously said that Rosatom aims to bring the plant online in the mid-2030s, with commissioning staged 8-10 months apart between the first and second units.Rosatom signed a roadmap with Kazakhstan in 2025 for the construction of the two VVER-1200 units and was named leader of the consortium implementing the project. Research work began in August 2025 at the site near the village of Ulken. The future plant has been named Balkhash. (ICE ALMATY)
