Tokayev appoints Karin as Kazakhstan's vice presidentPresident Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has appointed Yerlan Karin as vice president of Kazakhstan, the presidential press service said."To appoint Yerlan Tynymbaiuly Karin as Vice President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, relieving him of his previous post," the presidential decree reads.The Kurultai gave its consent to Karin's appointment earlier on Monday.Karin, 50, had served as first deputy head of the presidential administration prior to his nomination. He has previously held posts as presidential adviser and assistant, as well as state secretary.Kazakhstan's new constitution, adopted in a referendum, took effect on July 1, 2026. Among its key innovations is the creation of the vice presidency.Under the constitution, the vice president is appointed by the president with the consent of the Kurultai, the country's unicameral parliament, expressed by a majority vote of all deputies.The vice president represents the president in dealings with the Kurultai, the government and other state bodies, and exercises other powers assigned by the president.In the event of the president's early removal from office or death, the vice president assumes the head of state's duties until new elections are held.
