KazMunayGas plans digital twins for 12 oil fields by 2029Kazakhstan's national oil company KazMunayGas plans to roll out digital twins at 12 oil fields by the end of 2028, covering more than 90% of the group's crude output, the company said."Scaling up the project is expected to add 2.8 million tonnes of oil production and deliver an economic effect of about 326 billion tenge," KazMunayGas said.A digital twin for the East Moldabek field, operated by Embamunaygas in the Atyrau region, was presented at the AI & Digital Bridge 2026 forum in Astana."The system combines data on reservoirs, wells and production, runs development scenarios and recommends optimal options based on technical and economic efficiency. It said artificial intelligence processes large volumes of data and produces recommendations within hours, work that previously took months," the company said.KazMunayGas said the technology is particularly important for mature fields, where the share of hard-to-recover reserves is growing. Digital tools allow for more precise data analysis, shorter calculation times and better decisions on further field development, including without costly field experiments.Using an up-to-date geological and hydrodynamic reservoir model, the system calculates development options, identifies areas with remaining reserves and improves the efficiency of pressure maintenance. At East Moldabek, the digital reservoir model ran about 700 development scenarios. The digital twin also ranks wells by potential, automatically selects candidates for geological and technical work and helps determine well operating modes, including forecasting complications. Digital production monitors the well stock, with data updated every five minutes, allowing faster responses to deviations. The company said the tools will also cut production losses by 5% and reduce labor costs by up to 15%.KazMunayGas said field operators are expected to plan repairs, manage transport and handle procurement more efficiently with the digital twin.KazMunayGas is Kazakhstan's national operator for hydrocarbon exploration, production, refining and transportation, representing state interests in the oil and gas sector.
