Kazatomprom holders back China uranium deal, abstain on Russian contractShareholders of Kazakhstan's national atomic company Kazatomprom voted in favor of a spot uranium concentrate supply deal with China's State Nuclear Uranium Resource Development Company (SNURDC), but abstained from approving a separate contract with Russia's Uranium One, the company's press service said.The absentee vote was held on Oct. 7 at an extraordinary general meeting. Holders of 88.63% of voting shares backed the spot purchase and sale agreement for natural uranium concentrate with SNURDC, the company said.At the same time, holders of 88.34% of voting shares abstained on whether to sign a contract to supply natural uranium in the form of U3O8 to Uranium One Group, it said.Kazatomprom said in August it had reached agreements to sell natural uranium concentrate to the two buyers. The Kazakh uranium concentrate was to be shipped to the Siberian Chemical Combine for Uranium One and to the Alashankou railway station for SNURDC. Pricing, volumes and delivery timelines were not disclosed; the company said only that terms matched current market conditions. The final decision rested with shareholders.Kazatomprom mines uranium, processes rare metals and produces and sells beryllium and tantalum products. It exports 100% of its output. The state controls the company, with the Samruk-Kazyna sovereign wealth fund holding 62.99% and the Kazakh Finance Ministry 12.01%; the free float is 25%.SNURDC is a subsidiary of State Power Investment Corporation Limited (SPIC) responsible for uranium and fuel assembly supply, with a mandate to invest in uranium research, development and exploration. It received a state license to import natural uranium concentrate in December 2017.Uranium One, an international group of companies within the management perimeter of Rosatom's TENEX group, is one of the world's largest uranium mining companies with a diversified portfolio of international assets. Uranium One is a participant or shareholder in several Kazatomprom joint ventures, including Yuzhnoye Gorno-Khimicheskoye, Akbastau and Karatau. (ICE ALMATY)
