KAZAKHSTAN-CENTRAL-ASIA-WATER-CONVENTION

Central Asian states review draft framework convention on shared water useA draft Central Asian framework convention on water use is now with every country in the region for review, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said, according to the presidential press service.Tokayev told a consultative meeting of Central Asian heads of state and Azerbaijan on Thursday that "the region needs fresh approaches to managing shared water resources — ones built on mutual respect, equality and regard for every state's interests. Adopting a Central Asian Framework Convention on Water Use, he said, could mark the starting point for a new regional cooperation architecture."All sides are already reviewing the draft, he said.Tokayev also welcomed a proposal to create an International Water Organization under UN auspices, saying "it could be given an international — and specifically Central Asian — dimension. Joint efforts to advance it, he said, would be the region's shared contribution to global water governance."Tokayev first floated a water use convention in November 2025, at the 7th consultative meeting of Central Asian heads of state in Tashkent.
