LG ENERGY SOLUTION, LS CABLE & SYSTEM, GAON CABLE ... KOREAN COMPANIES DIVE INTO

South Korean battery and power infrastructure companies are moving quickly into the US artificial intelligence data center ecosystem, aiming to secure early positions in a market that is expanding across the full value chain, from energy supply to power transmission and storage. LS Cable & System and LS Materials presented new equipment for AI data centers at Data Centre World Asia 2026 in Singapore, including products that distribute power inside server racks. This marks an expansion from traditional data center power grids into more specialized infrastructure for AI servers. Gaon Cable is also strengthening its US operations through LSCUS, its American production subsidiary. The company plans to invest in facilities for overhead power lines, expanding beyond power distribution into transmission infrastructure. LSCUS is already increasing production capacity for medium- and low-voltage cables, with the first expansion phase expected to finish next month and the second in the first half of next year. The move reflects growing demand for grid investment linked to data center expansion, advanced manufacturing and new power generation facilities. According to the Edison Electric Institute, US power companies plan to invest about $178 billion in transmission grids between 2025 and 2028. Gaon Cable also aims to create synergies with LS GreenLink’s ultra-high-voltage subsea and underground cable business and is considering entering the nuclear power plant cable market. Hyosung Heavy Industries is focusing on next-generation transmission technologies for AI infrastructure. The company is developing key components such as solid-state transformers for AI data centers and building production facilities for high-voltage direct current transformers. HVDC technology is considered important because it reduces power losses and allows larger volumes of electricity to be transmitted efficiently. LG Energy Solution has become the only Korean battery company to join NVIDIA’s AI Factory ecosystem after being selected as a partner for NVIDIA DSX Ready battery energy storage systems. Its approved system uses large-capacity lithium iron phosphate batteries, offering high efficiency, long lifespan, load balancing and voltage stabilization for AI servers. The company has also secured battery supply opportunities with major US technology firms, including Google and Oracle. The trend reflects the rapid growth of US data center construction amid the AI boom. BloombergNEF expects US data center electricity consumption to almost double from 221 TWh this year to 391 TWh in 2030, creating major opportunities for Korean battery, cable and power equipment suppliers.
