Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft are currently deployed at the Lithuanian Air Force Base in Šiauliai as part of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission. Italy took over the mission at the end of July, deploying four Eurofighter aircraft and around 200 military personnel. The Italian contingent contributes to the surveillance and protection of the airspace of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. In September, Italian Eurofighters based in Šiauliai responded to several airspace security incidents in the region, including a drone incident in Lithuanian airspace and a separate reported airspace violation involving military aircraft.  The deployment confirms Italy’s operational contribution to NATO security on the Alliance’s eastern flank and underlines the strategic importance of Lithuania as a base for allied air defence activities in the Baltic region.
