AIRLANGGA URGES ACCELERATION OF DIGITALIZATION AND INDUSTRIALIZATION TO MATCH Vietnam's Economic Growth

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto highlighted that accelerating digitalization, semiconductor development, and artificial intelligence is essential for Indonesia to elevate its annual economic growth from 5 percent toward Vietnam's 9 percent trajectory. Pointing to Vietnam's 9.95 percent growth in the third quarter of 2026, Minister Airlangga emphasized that Vietnam's success stems from vast special economic zones spanning 2 million hectares, strong investor certainty, and early execution of international trade deals like the EU-CEPA and favorable US trade terms. While Vietnam's economy remains heavily export-driven due to a smaller domestic market, Indonesia retains a distinct advantage with its large internal consumer demand.   To capitalize on this advantage, the government is focusing on expanding industrialization beyond basic mineral downstreaming to increase the manufacturing sector's contribution above 20 percent of GDP. Minister Airlangga noted that downstreaming is merely one component of broader industrial development, calling for targeted support across key sectors including automotive, textiles, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), and strategic high-tech manufacturing. Combining digital transformation with comprehensive manufacturing growth will be critical to strengthening national competitiveness and expanding export capacity.  Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/airlangga-urges-indonesia-to-catch-up-with-vietnam-in-digital-ai-industries (ICE GIACARTA)
