INDONESIA TARGETS US$45B NICKEL EXPORTS, US$618B DOWNSTREAM INVESTMENT BY 2040

Indonesia is targeting at least US$45 billion in nickel exports in 2026, building on the success of its downstream processing strategy that has lifted nickel export value from about US$3.3 billion in 2017–2018 to more than US$40 billion in 2025. Bahlil Lahadalia, Coordinating Minister for Downstreaming and Energy Transition and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, said the policy of banning raw nickel ore exports and expanding domestic processing capacity has significantly increased the value added generated within Indonesia. He emphasized that downstreaming has become a key pillar of the country’s economic transformation and resource-based industrialization strategy. To further expand the benefits of downstreaming, the government has prepared a long-term master plan targeting US$618 billion in downstream investment by 2040. According to Bahlil Lahadalia, the initiative extends beyond the mineral sector and will also cover oil and gas, forestry, fisheries, and agriculture. The government expects the program to stimulate industrial development, strengthen technological capabilities, increase domestic business participation, create jobs, and expand exports of higher-value products, thereby boosting Indonesia’s economic independence and competitiveness.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/7587/markets-and-finance/indonesia-targets-us-45-billion-in-nickel-exports-in-2026-us-618-billion-in-downstream-investment-by-2040 (ICE GIACARTA)
