BANGLA QR MADE MANDATORY FOR RETAIL BUSINESS LICENSES

The Local Government Division (LGD) has instructed city corporations, municipalities, and district administrations to make Bangla QR transactions mandatory for retail businesses and merchants as a condition for issuing and renewing licenses. This directive, issued on 9 September, follows a communication from Bangladesh Bank aimed at enhancing financial inclusion and expanding digital payments. The LGD requested authorities to ensure proper implementation and addressed the letter to chief executives and administrators at various levels. Bangladesh Bank had already made Bangla QR the standard payment system from 1 July, replacing other QR codes. Consequently, the number of merchants accepting Bangla QR surged from 16 lakh on 1 July to over 30 lakhs by late August, with transactions reaching Tk3,578.74 crore during the eight weeks ending on 22 August.
