SRI LANKA SEEKS EU INVESTMENTS UNDER GLOBAL GATEWAY INITIATIVE

Sri Lanka Seeks EU Investments Under Global Gateway Initiative Sri Lanka has requested European Union investments to strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), support startups and expand export-oriented industries through the EU’s Global Gateway initiative. The proposal was discussed on October 15 during a meeting between Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe and European Commission official Pēteris Ustubs. Global Gateway aims to mobilise nearly €300 billion worldwide for projects involving digital technology, renewable energy, transport, healthcare, education and research. Abeysinghe stressed that Sri Lankan SMEs need better technology and financial support to meet international trade standards and reach foreign markets. He also proposed startup incubators to help entrepreneurs turn innovative ideas into successful businesses. The Deputy Minister encouraged European investors to consider Sri Lanka a gateway to Asian markets, highlighting its strategic maritime location, skilled workforce and ongoing economic reforms. He outlined reforms under the International Monetary Fund programme. Ustubs welcomed Sri Lanka’s progress, particularly the completion of its fifth and sixth programme reviews, describing these achievements as positive signals for investors. The meeting also addressed renewable energy, regional energy connectivity and transparent infrastructure development. Abeysinghe reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernising industry while attracting foreign investment responsibly. Representatives of the EU Delegation in Colombo also attended the discussions.   Source: Newsiwire                                                                                                                           Date: 16.10.2026 (ICE NEW DELHI)
