KMG PetroChem starts building ethane and propane pipelines from Tengiz fieldKMG PetroChem, a subsidiary of KazMunayGas, has started building two main pipelines in the Atyrau region to carry ethane and propane from the Tengiz field to petrochemical plants, KMG said.The pipelines will run from the gas separation complex at the Tengiz field to plants in the National Industrial Petrochemical Technopark special economic zone.“The project to build trunk pipelines for ethane and propane in a single corridor in the Atyrau region was launched on Oct. 22,” KazMunayGas said in a statement. “Together, these facilities will lay the groundwork for deep processing of hydrocarbons and production of high-value-added goods.”Each pipeline will be about 210 km long. The ethane pipeline will carry up to 1.6 million tonnes a year, and the propane pipeline up to 1.1 million tonnes a year.The company said construction would create up to 1,300 jobs at its peak and about 170 permanent jobs once the pipelines operate. It plans to put them into service by the end of 2028.KMG PetroChem is carrying out the project with an international consortium led by China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Co. Ltd., with CITIC Construction Co. Ltd. and ChPPI Kazakhstan LLP also taking part.Kazakhstan Petrochemical Industries Inc. makes polypropylene from Tengiz propane at a plant that opened in early November 2022. Its capacity is 500,000 tonnes of polypropylene a year.The Silleno plant, with a capacity of 1.25 million tonnes of polyethylene a year, is under construction in the Atyrau region. It is expected to account for about 1% of world polyethylene output. Work began in 2022, and completion is planned for 2029. KazMunayGas holds 29.9% of the project, SIBUR 30%, Sinopec 30% and KMG PetroChem, a KazMunayGas subsidiary, 10.1%.KMG PetroChem coordinates the KazMunayGas group’s petrochemical projects.
