KAZAKHSTAN-PRESIDENT-HIGHWAYS-RECONSTRUCTION
Kazakhstan needs high-quality roads to become transit hub - TokayevKazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has ordered the full reconstruction of all vehicular border crossings and the construction of national and local roads in 2027."Next year we must complete reconstruction of all vehicular border crossings. Until recently, this work went in fits and starts. We face a most urgent task: building all roads, both national and local, to a high standard," Tokayev said Wednesday in his annual state of the nation address."Citing rules and regulations, executive bodies in the center and the regions have turned this into a real game of football — they kicked the issue around and did everything they could to drown the problem in an impassable swamp. I repeat: we need very high-quality roads. Excuses about the quality of bitumen and crushed stone are not accepted," he stressed. The president said Kazakhstan cannot claim to be a global transit corridor or a Eurasian transport and logistics hub without high-quality roads and modern roadside services."That is what is at stake. It must be resolved no matter what. If the border has turned into a bottleneck, causing multi-kilometer traffic jams — and that is what is happening right now — then Kazakhstan cannot claim any leadership role," the president said.
