UKRAINE BUILDS 10 OILSEED PROCESSING PLANTS DURING WAR

Ukraine has built 10 oilseed processing plants since Russia’s full-scale invasion, yet the industry still operates below capacity, Ukroliyaprom Director General Stepan Kapshuk said at the Fat & Oil Industry 2026 conference.Despite wartime investment, plants processed 14 million tonnes of sunflower seeds last year, equivalent to just 68% of available capacity. Kapshuk noted that the sector is among the few in Ukraine that can equip entire processing plants with domestically manufactured machinery.A major constraint is shipping finished products. Dispatch delays cause sunflower meal to accumulate at plants, where prolonged storage can lead to mold and declining quality.Kapshuk proposed organizing mixed rail shipments carrying both vegetable oil and meal. Coordinating the movement of the two products could ease dispatch bottlenecks and help processors use more of their existing capacity. The industry’s challenge extends beyond building new plants to moving their output reliably. Better logistics could help translate wartime investment into higher production while reducing losses from deteriorating stocks.https://ubn.news/ukraine-builds-10-oilseed-processing-plants-during-war-but-capacity-remains-underused/ (ICE KIEV)
