Kazakhstan to start sixth gas reinjection compressor at Karachaganak by end of yearA sixth gas reinjection compressor will start operating at the Karachaganak field before the end of 2026 to hold oil output at 10-11 million tonnes a year, First Deputy Prime Minister Nurlybek Nalibayev said Wednesday.“By the end of this year, the sixth gas reinjection compressor will be commissioned at the Karachaganak field, which will keep oil production at 10-11 million tonnes a year,” Nalibayev said at a government news conference in Astana.KazMunayGas estimates the project, known as KEP-1B or 6ICP, at $735 million.Several projects at Karachaganak have aimed to maintain the plateau for liquid hydrocarbon production at 10-11 million tonnes a year by expanding existing gas treatment and reinjection systems and drilling new production and injection wells. The fifth raw gas reinjection compressor started up in September 2024, the fourth in 2022, and a project to remove gas production constraints in 2021.Karachaganak produced 12-13 million tonnes of oil and gas condensate in 2025.Karachaganak is one of the world’s largest fields, with reserves of 1.2 billion tonnes of oil and 1.35 trillion cubic meters of gas. It is developed by the Karachaganak Petroleum Operating B.V. consortium under a 40-year production sharing agreement signed in 1997.
